Course Information

This course provides you with the knowledge and training to shift materials safely using manual handling methods.

It includes assessing the risks associated with relocating the load, planning the relocation process and carrying out the relocation in accordance with the plan. It also covers how to comply with the relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations concerning the manual handling and movement of loads.

This course is suitable for anyone who has the need to move loads safely.

You can use these skills in your workplace but they also can apply to general situations in the home, and in community settings.

What will you learn?

You will gain and overview and basic understanding of:

  • The relevant WHS/OHS workplace procedures, codes of practice and industry guidelines concerning the manual lifting and movement of loads
  • risks when manually lifting and handling products, goods or materials and related precautions to control the risk, including:
    • controlled actions on a movement during lifting
    • distance over which load is to be shifted
    • frequency of shifting operations
    • load on the spine during lifting
    • postures and positions during lifting
    • rotation and side movement of the spine during lifting
    • type, weight and position of the load, including loose, liquid, dangerous or hazardous products, goods or materials
  • site layout and obstacles
  • work layout

Award issued:

Students who successfully complete both the theoretical and practical assessment components of this nationally recognised training will be awarded the statement of attainment for:

  • TLID0020 - Shift materials safely using manual handling methods

This course is delivered by Mixed Mode:

  • Completion of self paced online learning which can take 4-6 hours (time taken varies depending on student committment)
  • Completion of short one hour practical assessment session.
  • You can book for your practical session by calling 1300 856 684 after you have completed the online component. Group bookings are also available and can be conducted on your site (Minimum of 12 people)
  • Course enrolment is for 90 days - You have a maximum of 3 months to complete both the online and the practical components of this course.
  • All assessments are submitted via our online learning portal.
  • All learning material for this unit is provided via our online learning portal.
  • All equipment is provided for the practical assessments.

Learner Requirements

You will require access to a computer or laptop and an internet connection to complete this course.

You must also be able to use a web browser(such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge) and have your own valid email address. Shared emails addresses are not permitted, if you do not have your own email we suggest you create a Gmail address here

A learner undertaking this course will require a specific skill level in Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy.

This course has been assessed as requiring the following Australian Core Skills Framework levels:

  • Learning - Level 2

  • Writing - Level 2
  • Oral Communication - Level 1
  • Numeracy - Level 2
